Urban Arts Summer Program
2 AugUrbanArts 2011 SUMMER PROGRAMS UNITE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD!
July 11th, (Toronto, ON) UrbanArts Community Arts Council is brightening up and uniting the Weston-Mount Dennis neighbourhood this summer with a full schedule of youth arts programming. The UrbanArts’ team is leading everything from dance camps and live music performances to mural painting and community beautification projects. This year, UrbanArts has hired a team of 16 youth to lead its summer activities.
SUMMER PROGRAMS:
SummerArts – Offers four distinct summer camps for youth 8-24 including photography, multi-arts and dance to engage and ignite the artistic abilities of youth in the area. The program wraps up with a talent show & photo exhibit on July 29th.
Graffiti Transformation – A group of creative youth visual artists work together to revitalize community spaces and transform them into large scale works of art. This year’s mural will be painted on the south-east wall of 1901 Weston Rd at the corner of Weston Rd and Lawrence Ave. W. A second mural will be installed at the Railway Lands in Mount Dennis. The program wraps up with a mural unveiling and BBQ on August 11th.
DreamBuilding – A collective of youth working to beautify the community and unify the community through dynamic community programming including our popular Act On It! Theatre Workshops, Mosaic Project, Speakers’ Series and our most anticipated event, the CultureShock Community Arts Festival.
CultureShock – The highlight of the summer takes place on Friday August 12th from 6-9 pm and Saturday August 13th from 1-7pm with our 7th Annual CultureShock Community Arts Festival, at Weston Collegiate Institute. The festival, MC’d by Cabbie Richards of the Score and Hip Hop pioneer Michie Mee, and headlined by Hip Hop Icon Wes ‘Maestro’ Williams, will feature an array of local musical talent, an art exhibit, youth art activities, vendor booths, and of course great food. The festival aims to profile the artistic community and to reflect UrbanArts’ ongoing commitment of engaging youth and community development through the arts.
UrbanArts is a non-profit Community Arts Council focused on enhancing neighbourhoods by engaging youth in community development through the arts. Our mandate is to promote, engage and facilitate cultural and community development opportunities between artists, arts organizations, community members and community organizations.
