Nine people are dead and many more are sick after a terrible listeriosis outbreak struck the country. Eight of the deceased are from Ontario, and the latest fatality was in British Columbia.
“There are 15 deaths among the confirmed cases. Listeriosis has been identified as the underlying contributing cause of nine of these deaths,” confirmed Dr Mark Raizenne of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency late Friday.
With a 70-day incubation period for the illness that number could rise significantly in the weeks and months to come.
And that infection is linked to tainted meat from a Maple Leafs Foods facility in North York. Word of the crisis first emerged nearly two weeks ago.
As the days pass since the link between listeria and tainted meat was first proposed, the list of recalled products grows. As the company works diligently to assuage a worried public’s fears, a new set of items has been pulled from store shelves.
Here’s a complete list of the forbidden foods, including applicable product code, product name, UPC code, package size and best before dates.
The recalled products have an establishment number of 97B and carry best-before dates up to and including the dates listed.
