CANADIAN FESTIVAl OF SPOKEN WORD

Thursday October 12th marks the beginning of the 3rd Annual Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. The festival is held in a different city each year, and we need you all to come out and show the rest of the country how Toronto gets down. Here’s a look at what the festival has to offer.

Thursday October 12th: Noon – 5pm, Admission $5, Trane Studios, 964 Bathurst St.

Open mic, panel discussion on the recording of spoken word cd’s, workshop on writing spoken word pieces with Shane Koyczan, Social Justice poetry showcase sponsored by Now Magazine, panel discussion on how to successfully tour as a poet

Thursday: 8pm – 11pm, Admission $10, Trane Studios, 964 Bathurst St.

Slam Competition Round 1 – All eight cities will compete against one another

Friday October 13th: Noon – 5pm, Admission $5, Trane Studios, 964 Bathurst St.

Open mic, Dub Poetry Showcase sponsored by the Dub Poets Collective, Youth Poetry Jam, Group poem workshop, discussion an applying for grants.

Friday: 8pm – 11pm, Admission $5, Trane Studios, 964 Bathurst St.

The top four teams from Thursday and Friday will move on to the finals on Saturday night!

Saturday October 14th: Noon – 5pm, Admission $5 The Victory Cafe, 581 Markham St.

Open Mic, African Canadian Showcase hosted by Lorraine Reid, Queer Poets Showcase sponsored by Xtra Magazine, Nerd Poetry Showcase, Guerilla Poetry on the streets of Toronto, showcase at Indigo at John and Richmond

Saturday October 14th: 8pm, Admission $20 in advance, $25 at the door, The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts

The team slam finals! The four top teams will compete to determine what city is the best in the nation. Vancouver has won two years in a row, and are hoping to make it three. Our poets of honour will also perform; Juno Award winning poet Lillian Allen of Toronto, and Vancouver’s Shane Koyczan, the only Canadian poet to win the American Poetry Slam Champtionship. Music at the show will be provided by DJ G-Spot.

Tickets for the final night are available now through the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts Box Office at 416.366.7723, or online at http://www.stlc.com. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (if there are tickets remaining). The event begins at 8pm.

Festival passes will be available at the Trane Studios on the Thursday and Friday. Festival passes are $35 and give you access to all of the events on all three days.

    The days and dates seem to be out of line – for example October 12th is not a Thursday but a Friday. If you could find out for me which part is accurate I’d really appreciate it. my email is jgjrob@hotmail.com
